The remainder of the class, Billy couldn’t concentrate. He was terrified. He couldn’t stop thinking about Mr. Horrowitz’s house. It didn’t help that Kyle and Dermot kept reminding him.

When school ended, Billy ran home. He went straight upstairs and locked himself in his room. He came out only when his mom called for supper.

“What’s wrong, honey?” his mom said when they were at the kitchen table.

He shook his head.

“You haven’t touched your plate. Something happened at school?”

He shook his head again but quickly picked up a fork and began eating his meal. He didn’t want his mom asking any more questions.

“I’m gonna go out with the guys tonight,” his father said to his mother. “I might be a little late.”

“Okay, dear,” she said, clearing up the table.

Later in the evening, Billy came down from his room. His father had already left and his mother was busy on the telephone.

“I’m going to Jason’s house,” he said as he made his way to the door.

“Did you do your homework?” his mom replied, covering the phone receiver.

“Yeah, Mom. Bye.” He was out the door.

On the front porch, he stood. The cold wind pierced his cheeks. It was dark and freezing. He was more scared than ever.

He went around to the garage and came out with a bicycle. With the slippery snow it was difficult to maintain balance, but Billy did his best. He slowly and carefully made his way to Mr. Horrowitz’s house.

At the front entrance, he stopped. The path leading to the house was dark and scary. Thinking about the lost boy sent a chill up his spine. He started getting goosebumps. He looked around and the street was quiet except for the howl of the winter wind.

He tightened his grip on the bicycle and rode straight into the small forest. He kept his eyes focused on the path ahead, avoiding looking at the trees and bushes on either side. He maneuvered around branches that were sticking out and made his way to the house.

The house looked more like a cabin. It was small and made of logs. Billy dropped his bicycle and ran up the steps to the front porch. He grabbed a troll beside the front door and turned.

Standing at the bottom of the steps was a ghostly figure.

Billy froze.

The ghostly figure shrieked and lurched at Billy.

Billy screamed and pulled out his father’s gun.

He fired.

The next second, Billy was on his bicycle, racing back through the dark path. His heart was pounding and he felt as if he might lose control of the bicycle.

Out of nowhere, a branch caught his wheel. He somersaulted to the ground. His knees were scratched and bruised. Tears began to water his eyes, but Billy immediately got on the bicycle and rode out of Mr. Horrowitz’s property.
